Summer 2012

Dear Rugby Community,

After a successful social and regular season we are excited to move into Summer 7’s mode. There are a large number of Sharks still in the Flagstaff area and we will continue to train once a week. Starting May 15th we will be practicing every Tuesday beginning at 6:00PM on the NAU campus. The field that we play on, Observatory Field, is just behind Reilly Hall and parking is readily available. We welcome all interested people to come out to our summer training sessions were the atmosphere is welcoming and the weather is perfect.

For those of you that don’t know, our summer season is what we want to make it. There are a number of tournaments throughout the surrounding areas to compete in and if we get enough people I am sure we could potentially travel out of state for a couple. This summer season is all made possible by our summer training sessions. Summer training sessions consist of touch practice and other fun activities, e.g. disc golf, regular golf, trips to the creek, and of course trips to the pub. We are a band of brothers that like to enjoy Flagstaff to the fullest.

Touch practice is the most basic form of rugby and is essentially pick-up rugby. There is no contact or tackling and people come out just to get a solid run in. There are both experienced and non-experienced players at these sessions and we are willing to teach the game to anyone interested. Since there is no contact, men and women play side by side, which adds an interesting spin to the game.

The Landsharks have been a part of the Flagstaff community for over 35 years and we are always looking for new players to add to our roster. Summer training sessions are not just for college students. The Landsharks compete in the Arizona Men’s Division throughout the year and we appreciate all interested folk, young and old. Under 19? Our club has a place for you! Our U19 club is available for boys from 14-19 years old; anytime is a great time to start learning the rewarding sport of rugby. Be ready for the season to start in the fall by coming out to our summer training sessions.

Try something new and put yourself up to the ultimate challenge.. PLAY RUGBY! You won’t regret it!

Our season is coming to a close. It has been a long, tough, and hard fought season for the Landsharks. We currently have two season games left. This weekend, Saturday 19th, we will be hosting the Hurricanes. The game is to be held on NAU's South Field Complex with a kick of 1 pm. All are encouraged to attend and cheer for the home team! Our last game will be on the road against Camelback (Saturday 26th).

Playoffs for DIII are still being determined with more updates to come.

As always we will be ending the season with a team banquet to be held at Collins Irish Pub in Flagstaff, AZ. Date and times tbd. Other social activities are in the works and will also be posted at a later time.

Practices continue to be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8pm on NAU's South Fields. Even with the official season ending spring practices will still be held in order to prepare for the Fall season, mainly to reteach the basics to those he were thrown into the fire this previous year. Times and locations are not set in stone yet and will be determined by the board here shortly so be looking for another update. In the meantime come out and support the Landsharks as we hope to gain momentum going into the playoffs!!
